‘OMG! That’s me!’: Oñate High School senior becomes New Mexico’s 1st girl wrestling champion
LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- She may be small, but she's fierce.
At less than 100 pounds, Oñate High School senior Angelita Altamirano is New Mexico's first ever girls' individual wrestling champion.
"The fact that like, I won it, and it was the first year, it's crazy!" Altamirano told ABC-7 in an exclusive interview. "I'm like, OMG! That's me!"
But for Altamirano, it's about more than making history.
"Wrestling was always boys," she said. "It was never girls. This year, my senior year, they finally did a sanctioned girl's state tournament."
Through years of hard work, Altamirano has proven that girls are just as tough as boys.
"Waking up every day at 6 a.m. for practice, getting beat up by the boys - like it finally all paid off," Altamirano said. "Whatever size you are does not matter."
With a record of 23 to 1, the teenager has only lost one match: to Texas state champ Kylie Hernandez from Eastlake High School in El Paso.
"Would you like to wrestle her again?" ABC-7 asked Altamirano.
"Yes!" she exclaimed.
