Multiple mobile homes destroyed in wind-fueled Chaparral fire
CHAPARRAL, New Mexico -- At least a half-dozen mobile homes in a Chaparral complex were destroyed by a fast-moving fire fanned by high wind gusts Friday afternoon.
The blaze on Gala Way Lane broke out around 12:45 p.m. and was battled by 45 firefighters from Doña Ana County, West Valley, El Paso, and Otero County before being brought under control several hours later.
Doña Ana County Fire & Emergency Services said there were no injuries reported; residents were safely evacuated to a nearby school and the Red Cross was assisting them.
In addition to the mobile homes, fire officials said two vehicles were destroyed. Residents and witnesses also said multiple pets likely died in the blaze, but no firm numbers were available.
ABC-7 chief meteorologist 'Doppler Dave' Speelman said wind gusts in southern New Mexico reached over 40 miles an hour. Those windy conditions had prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag fire warning for much of the region.
While the cause of the fire was under investigation, Dona Ana County spokesperson Luce Rubio said "it seemed clear that stronger than 40 mile-an-hour winds spread the fire quickly to engulf the six mobile homes and other structures."
Fire crews were expected to remain on the scene throughout Friday evening to put out any hot spots and handle cleanup.
