Movie theaters reopen in Doña Ana County after 14 months in the dark

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - For the first time in fourteen months, Las Cruces film aficionados can snack on buttery popcorn, unwrap their 3D glasses and watch their favorite flicks in a movie theater.

The Allen family has now opened Telshor 12 for the first time since March 17th, 2020.

“As far as I know, we had never had a day closed until March 17th," explained Russell Allen, the president of Allen Theaters. "In our family, that’s the day of infamy.”

"I've missed it so much," said Tori Hoffman, who spent much of the year on unemployment. "I was almost in tears the day we had to leave."

"It feels wonderful," said Cindy Cook, who was excited to bring back the weekly tradition of attending the movies with her girlfriends.

When Doña Ana County's infection rate improved to the "green" level on Friday, the state allowed theaters to reopen at 25% capacity.

During the pandemic, the Allen family was forced to close 16 theaters across 13 southern New Mexico cities. The family lost more money than they could ever imagine.

“Millions," Allen said. "Millions in saved money. Millions in gross. Millions in payroll.”

Note: Allen Theatres was granted two Paycheck Protection Program loans totaling $2,098,462.50.
