Chaparral’s comic scene thrives with local shop and community events
EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- You might not expect a small community like Chaparral, just outside of El Paso, to be a hub for comic book enthusiasts, but the local scene is making waves.
The Comic Attic, owned by Markus Stroke, is at the heart of this growing comic culture, offering not only a place to buy comics but also a space for creativity and community engagement.
Many visitors are surprised to find such a vibrant comic shop in the area, often stumbling upon it and becoming excited by what they discover.
The shop goes beyond selling comic books; it gives back to the community by hosting events open to the public.
One such event, "Trick or Read," will take place on Saturday, October 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
It will feature local comic book artists, including those who incorporate the unique culture of the Borderland into their stories, showcasing heroes from Chaparral, El Paso, and Juarez.
Local artists Elvira and Ronnie Dukes have also been actively involved in the community, teaching over 400 Chaparral middle school students to create and sell their own comic books.
The workshops inspire young artists to bring their creative visions to life, helping them realize that their ideas can resonate with others.
With a growing comic book community and events that draw in crowds, Chaparral is proving that even small towns can be the home of big creativity.
