Virus cases top 6,000 in New Mexico & 300 in Dona Ana County, Otero County Prison outbreak grows

SANTA FE, New Mexico — Health officials in New Mexico on Monday reported five more deaths and 165 new cases of the coronavirus statewide.

Figures released by officials pushed the statewide death toll to 270 with the total number of cases now at 6,096.

In Doña Ana County, there were 15 new cases, pushing the total infections there to 309. Deaths remained unchanged at two.

In neighboring Otero County, there were no new cases among residents, with that count remaining at just eight. However, there were 24 new cases reported among individuals being held by federal and state authorities at the Otero County Prison Facility -- raising the detention caseload to 59 total. There also remained 43 cases at the Otero County ICE Processing Center.

Health officials said of the over 6,000 cases in New Mexico, infections have been most prevalent in McKinley County with 1,953, in San Juan County with 1,376 infections, and in Bernalillo County with 1,218. Only three of the state’s 33 counties haven’t reported any Covid-19 cases.

Two of the five deaths reported Monday were in McKinley County, two more were in Bernalillo County and one was in San Juan County.
