Rainless Sunday Sheds New Light For Some

EL PASO COUNTY, TX- A day without relentless rains sheds some light at how much damage the Borderland has suffered so far.

But, City officials ask that you do not let your guard down. There still is some possibilty of storms in the near future.

The flood emergency team urged people to stay out of flooded areas until the possible storms pass next week.

Emergency teams have been filling up sandbags, and shelters around town are ready for more evacuees, if needed.

Several retention ponds at Pershing, the Spaghetti Bowl, Horizon City, and others are close to capacity.

Monday will be the tenth day of Storm 2006, and more rain could make the dams overflow with the possibility of washing out entire neighborhoods.

The sunshine on Sunday allowed some victims in the town of Socorro to dig themselves out of the mud.

Bulldozers are clearing roadways and essentially freeing homes and cars from the earth.

ABC-7 has learned from Socorro City officials, that extensive repair will be needed in the Moon City area.

Officials add that they will continue taking reports from victims, as Texas State Guard Troops and other citizens help with food and the clean-up.

Over in Clint, the City of El Paso is offering help.

Last Sunday, ABC-7 went to the area around Mankato Street, where homes were devastated when rain water flooded the landfill, sending trash down into the homes.

Followed by a week’s worth of rain, residents don’t know what to do.

Jackie Boutwell, a resident in the area tells ABC-7, “it’s obvious it’s from the dump on our property something needs to be done…some kind of planning something just has to be done”

The City County Health District says it is concerned that the area near the landfill is a health hazard because of the spill over.

Mud and water samples are currently underway.
