Man Accused Of Killing NMSU Student To Change Plea

LAS CRUCES, NM- A man accused of killing NMSU graduate student Katie Sepich will reportedly change his plea.

Twenty-seven-year-old Gabriel Avila pleaded not guilty on March 19th to first-degree murder, rape, and kidnapping.

Court records say Avila will changehis pleaand will be sentenced on Thursday. The records are unclear what plea Avila will enter.

ABC-7 spoke with the Sepichfamily, who is originally from Carlsbad. They say knowing Avila ischanginghis plea from “Not Guilty” will give them more closure, but say their sense of loss remains.

As for Avila, he has been in prison since last year for committing a burglary. His new sentence may keep him behind bars for therest of his life.
