County Commissioners Give Go-Ahead On New Port Of Entry Near Fabens
EL PASO, TX. – El Paso County Commissioners are taking steps to obtain the land needed for a new international bridge.
The desired site is near the Fabens port of entry – so it would be the Easternmost crossing in the county. Commissioner Miguel Teran says he’s been working for the last 12 years with the American and Mexican governments on building the port. Teran says he’s not ruling out the use of eminent domain if it is required in order to gain the necessary land. County Judge Anthony Cobos spoke up to discourage thinking that way.
Still, the court voted unanimously to take any necessary steps to purchase the private land. “This is why we were giving them 100 and some odd acres. So that they could actually use the latest technology in inspection stations. This is going to be the most sophisticated station in the country,” Teran said. Thecommissionersaid construction on the bridge should start between 2010 and 2012 andwould take six months to complete construction.
