Police Investigate Stabbing At Mayfield High School

LAS CRUCES, NM — A 17-year-old boy who attends Mayfield High School as a senior was stabbed Wednesday in an altercation in one of his classes, school officials said..

A medical helicopter took the boyto Thomason Hospital to be treated for a stab wound to the torso, school officials said.

Adrian Nuncio, 15, was detained by Las Cruces police and was subsequently arrested on a charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center, authorities said.

Officials said the instrument used in the stabbing was an X-Acto knife, a tool commonly used in art projects.

One witness, Jesus Carrillo, described a brief verbal argument that preceded the violent outburst. “They were talking trash,” he said.”One kid said something about some gang, the other fool says, ‘No.’ Then he stabbed him or something and I just ran away.”

The incident will require further review, said Jo Galvan, a Las Cruces Public Schools spokeswoman.

“Anything that’s used as a weapon, whether it’s considered a knife, or something that’s used like a baseball bat,we take it seriously,” she said. “Students can’t be harming each other. We’re going have to look as to what disciplinary action that will come about because of this.”

“The district takes a stance, as well as Mayfield High School, when a student is out of line for the school setting,” saidschool principal Chris Cook. “We’ll take the appropriate steps to make sure the other students are safe.”

The incident was confined to one classroom and school officials determined a lockdown of the entire campus wasn’t needed, authorities said.
