Program Will Provide Computers And Internet To Southside And Downtown

EL PASO, TX – The Southside and Downtown areas now have free wireless internet access and a new program is set to help some area residentsget computer training.

The strongest signalextends fromthe County Courthouse to Aoy Elementary. The Civic Center and City Hall are also within range.

“It’s going to help kids who want to do their homework. It’s going to help adults who want to file their taxes or find the answers to the questions they have,” said City Representative Beto O’ Rourke.”

Known as “Digital El Paso,” the pilot program will provide free wireless internet access and computers to residents in the “Segundo Barrio,’ the Chihuahuitas and the surrounding Downtown areas.

The program was made possible by help from more than 15 organizations.Part of the program also includes providing free refurbished computers to many families designated by the La Fe Health Clinic. The families must sign up for classes and once complete can take home a computer.

“Its really going to change the way people learn and do business and interact with the world. This is really exciting for south El Paso,” said O’ Rourke.
