Las Crucens Elect New Mayor

LAS CRUCES – The race for mayor came down to the wire Tuesday night, withonly 74 votes separating the two candidates after the final ballots were counted.

With all precincts reporting, District 6council memberKen Miyagishima beat incumbent Mayor Bill Mattiace.

“It’s a victory for our volunteers,” Miyagishima said.”They worked so hard to do what they did and it’s just incredible.’

Mattiace conceded the race to Miyagishima late in the night. “Councilor, Mayor-Elect Miyagishima, congratulations,” Mattiace said in a phone call.”Unofficially, it looks like you are now mayor by a margin, I’ve been told, of about 74 votes with the last poll coming in.”

“Congratulations to the mayor. He ran a great race and he did good things for the city. Hopefully, he’ll stay involved,” Miyagishima said.

The results were still unofficial, and the city clerk will canvass all the votes before Miyagishima is officially announced as the winner.
