Las Cruces Mayor Mattiace Calls For Recount

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Las Cruces Mayor-Elect Ken Miyagishima is reactingFriday morning to news that incumbent Mayor Bill Mattiace is challenging the election results.

Tuesday’s vote count put Mattiace 74 votes behind Miygashima. Mattiace told city council Thursday he will not only challenge the results, but will file a lawsuit.

“I will be addressing some of the libelous and scandalous statements that were given to the residents of the city of Las Cruces. I’ll bring those forward as well,” Mayor Mattiace said.

“That kinda comes with the territory when you’re in public office. You’re called all kinds of things. We don’t like it. But it takes developing a little bit of a thicker skin,” Miyagishima responded.

Mattiace said determining an accurate vote count will make Miyagishima a “more efficient” mayor by removing any cloud of doubt about the legitimacy his administration.
