Children Of Fallen Soldiers Honored

EL PASO, TX. – This Veteran’s Day is extra special for some children at Fort Bliss.

Their fathers were killed in Iraq, now they’re getting a medal. Three families, including 8 children, were honored with the Gold Medal of Remembrance. It’s a reminder that the war isn’t just on the battlefield, it’s also at home.

Three family’s lives have changed forever. AsU.S. Senator John Cornyn spoke, many wiped away tears, thoughts of their husbands and fathers running through their minds.”We’d like to bring each of the families forward,” Cornyn said as he introduced families,one by one.

Each child was honored with the Gold Medal of Remembrance. It’s given to the children of soldiers who’ve died while serving our country.”I was just thinking about the good times that we had and everything, when he was here,”said 12-year old Hasaan Mason.

He andhis brother Jihad and their sister, Sabreeyah are slowly coping with the death of their dad, Staff Sergeant Michael Moody, Jr., who was killed in Iraq june 23rd.

“I think it’s pretty cool that I get a medal for my dad like that. It’s cool for him to be remembered like that.”Staff Sergeant Moody’s wife, Malinda Mason-Moody said “The world is not allowed to forget the sacrifices that are being made everyday by soldiers and the impact it has on families.”

About 30 soldiers stationed at Fort Bliss who are in the war were parents. To date, 208 children have been given the medal nationally.
