NMSU To Work On Smart Sprinklers

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – New Mexico State University could begin testing commercial smart sprinklers.

The university is proposing a test of several commercial smart irrigation systems that program themselves and adjust automatically according to monthly climate data. That’s according to state climatologist Ted Sammis.

He says programming a regular programmable sprinkler system just once can lead to overwatering or underwatering, depending on the time of year. He says people tend to set them in the summer, which leads to overwatering in the spring and fall.

New Mexico State’s tests would check the efficiency of smart sprinklers compared with regular ones. The tests would last for a year.
