Twin Inspiration For ‘Helmets Of Love’ For Providence Pediatric Unit
EL PASO — Two young football stars began the season as a team, they’re fraternal twin brothers. But one of them suddenly died of leukemia.
That proved to be a legacy of the young victim. The Cobrasbatted the Tar Heels in the Little Bowl this past weekend. It’s a yearly game highlighting the city’s top high school football talent.
With Saturday’s game nearing completion, the Cobras were down 24 to nothing. They neededan onside kick to get the ball back.
And they got it.
With the final seconds of the game ticking down, theCobras throw long andthepasswas good for atouchdown.
In the end, it was stuff dreams are made of: Cobrascome from behind for thewin: 26-24.
Cody Thornburg used to play football with his brother, Tyler. But earlier this year, Tyler was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and died soon after.
Cody continued to play, though, dedicating the season to his brother. Tyler’s family says he is the reason for the last minute comeback and win.Tyler’s mother says although it’s extremely difficult to understand at times, she knows Tyler is in a much better place.
The Thornburgs want to keep Tyler’s spirit alive by starting “Tyler’s Helmets of Love.” They want to collect toys for the pediatric unit at Providence.
