EPISD Fills Vacancies On School Board
By Celina Avila
EL PASO — Trustees with El Paso Independent School District appointed on Tuesday two members on the school board.
After several months with vacancies in Districts Two and Three, the board named the trustees to the board rather than having them elected.
The board reasoned the candidates wouldn’t have had enough time to properly raise money for an election and that there was a very large pool of applicants the public otherwise would have had to consider.
In District Two, Carolyn Grantham is replacing Carlos Cordova, who has now pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges as part of a public corruption scandal. More information on this development is available by clicking on the link provided.
In District Three, Carlos Flores was appointed to replace Sal Mena. Flores, a former teacher and now a business attorney. “I’m looking forward to collaborating with the rest of my community and my constituents to do what needs to be done to continue the great progress and to continue to move this district forward,” he said.
Trustees who serve on the EPISD are not compensated, but the members are ultimately responsible for decisions affecting one of the city’s largest employers and handling a budget worth $403 million.
