SOCORRO — Officials with the Socorro Police Department are putting some money where their mouth is when it comes to hiring more recruits. Authorities with the departmenton Thursdayannounced they would offer a cash bonus for new officers.

The department will offering a $2,000 signing bonus for new officers, to be split over time.

Police Chief Bill Mansion said after the officer’s first year on the force, he or she will get half the extra money. Thereafter, the officer will receive $250 every three months until the other $1,000 is paid.

Mansion hopes the incentive will put more men and women in uniforms. “We want to be the first ones out of the gate on this,” he said. “We want to see what it can do to help us with our staffing and get some of these candidates to give us a second look and maybe make a career out here.”
