President Of EP Police Association Critically Injured In Wreck

by Veronique Masterson

EL PASO — The president of the El Paso Police Officers Association is in critical condition after being involved in a wreck.

Officer Bobby Holguin, 42, is in critical, but stable condition at Thomason hospital after the motorcycle he was riding slammed into a van.

The accident, which happened shortly before 5 Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Doniphan and Frontera in the Upper Valley, is still under investigation.

“What we ask for right now is for your prayers and support,” said police spokesman Chris Mears, who said he was also speaking on behalf of Holguin’s family and the officer’s association.

Mears said Holguin has been with the department for 18 years and has been president of the El Paso Municipal Police Officers Association for three years.

According to investigators, a teenager driving the van was travelling north on Doniphan and failed to yield the right of way while turning onto Frontera.

They say that is when Holguin crashed his motorcycle into the van. His wife, who was also on the motorcycle with him, was also transported to Thomason Hospital. Officials said she is in stable condition. The driver of the van was not hurt, they added.

“It was a serious collision, but we are getting some positive information from doctors … he is still not out of the woods yet,” said Mears.
