Super Tuesday: How Did It Get To Be So Big?

NATIONAL REPORTS — Tomorrow is Super Tuesday, perhaps the most important day in a presidential campaign, short of election day itself.

It was back in 1984, when nine lawmakers, mostly from the south, concocted Super Tuesday out ofnine mostly southern states. Those officials were aiming to give the south as a region more say in who becomes president.

Now, 24 years later, it’s now up to 24 states and has the feel of something close to a national primary. “Once southern states came together, other states said ‘I don’t want to be left behind, either,'” said Sam Donaldson, reporter and anchor forABC news.

From California to New York, stateswhich hold a third of the nations population, candidates are feverishly trying to gain influence – andpoliticians have their reasons.

People like to be with the winner. All of a sudden money comes in that was previously laggging, and the endorsements appear that were being held back and the momentum was also big,” Donaldson said.

With so many millions voting on Super Tuesday, one day it will make primary history.
