Council Votes To Launch New Anti-ASARCO Ad Campaign

EL PASO, TX – City leaders have made it clear that ASARCO is not welcomed and are about to take their fight to the airwaves.

The City Council approved the launching of a new ad campaign to countera recent wave ofpro-ASARCO advertising.

In regards to ASARCO’s ad campaign, Mayor John Cook stated, “The television time they are buying in El Paso and Austin tells me they are running a very strong campaign to change public perception.”

Seven City Representatives voted for the measure with Melina Castro being the only one to cast a vote against it.

As a result of the move, the city will now spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in its battle against ASARCO.

City Council approved up to $50,000that will enableCity Manager Joyce Wilson to work with a consultant on a strategic plan to counter ASARCO.

According to City Officials, the ad campaign might include a public relations campaign and public hearings.

City officials estimate the city might spend close to $400,000 on the actual ad campaign once the counseling sessions are over.

Funds for the campaign will be taken from an ASARCO Litigation account the city has. The rest will come from taxpayers.
