Family Begins Healing After Losing Everything In Fire

ORGAN, N.M. — A single father of two kids who is also a student at New Mexico State University worked to salvage remnants of memories after a fire destroyed the family’s mobile home Wednesday.
Christopher Kane awoke Wednesday morning to find his living room on fire. Fire crews responded to the blaze along the 6700 block of Fox Rd in Organ, New Mexico, but everything was destroyed, including all of his computer science textbooks.
Kane said he is saddened by the loss of his home, butwas glad that he was able to save his two most precious treasures, his 9-year-old son Tyler and 6-year-old daughter Kylie.
“If my kids wouldn’t have made it, I would have laid down and asked God to take me, because they are my life. My son and my daughter are everything, everything,” Kane said.
Support for the family has come in the form of donated clothing. The Southern New Mexico Red Cross provided for housing in a motel and the Las Cruces Public School District is collecting for additional necessities on behalf of the family.
Kane said he is thankful for the support and hopes to begin restoring some sense of ‘normal’ to the family’s life.
“I want to go to school on Monday, try to act like everything’s okay. I want my kids to go to school, and act like everything’s normal. If I don’t, we’ll just live in the ‘What Happened?’ and this is where we’ll be remaining,” Kane said.
The only casualties of Wednesday’s fire were the family’s two dogs who were unable to get out of the home before it was engulfed in flames.
