Burges High School’s Awarding Winning Yearbook

EL PASO, Texas – The Pacemaker Award is considered the Pulitzer Prize of high school journalism, and Burges High School’s year book is the 2008 recipient. On Thursday’s Estela’s Escuelas, ABC-7 took you inside “hoofbeats” territory where the journalism department puts together the award winner. Sixteen journalists-in-the-making have been hard at work all year taking pictures and editing copy and this week they saw the fruits of their labor. After a quick check, the year book was distributed to the students. The students also put together a newspaper and literary magazine. Journalism teacher Pat Monroe has been at the helm for 18 years. Her students have walls full of awards. For the 14th year in a row all three publications took the grand sweepstakes award from the Southwest Scholastic Press Association.
