Off-Duty Border Patrol Agent Arrested After Eastside Standoff

EL PASO, TX — Dozens of El Paso police officers and the SWAT team spent hours at a standoff involving on off-duty Border Patrol agent Wednesday morning.

The call went out at about 3:15 a.m. for a domestic dispute at the Lake Fairway apartments near Vista Del Sol and Lomaland in East El Paso.

Police said they believedthe suspect, 26-year-old Derrick Hernanandez, was armed with a handgun when he barricaded himself inside one of the apartments.

About 30 people had to evacuate the complex and others were asked to stay inside while authorities dealt with the situation inside.

After several commands to exit the apartment, Hernandez was taken into custody by members of the SWAT team.

Hernandez was arrested and charged with assault causing bodily injury (family violence), police said. He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under $3,500 bond.
