ABC-7 Listens: Stacked Cars Close To Homes Worry Neighbor

By ABC-7 Reporter/Anchor Veronique Masterson

EL PASO, Texas — Stacks of cars close to nearby homes have one ABC-7 viewer worried.

At the edge of an auto salvage yard off Zaragoza, some vehicles don’t seem like they would stand through a gust of wind. That is what worries neighbor Ray Padilla, especially if there are children around.

“The cars are already collapsed and everything, and what would happen if some kids were playing in there or whatever.”

Padilla also pointed to a cut in the fence.

“There’s a way to get in there, these cars will start falling on them and they’re going to end up getting hurt.”

Padilla said when he informed the owner of A&B Auto Salvage about his concern, he was told it was to keep people from breaking in and stealing parts, something Padilla’s son has seen before.

“I saw one of the kids he was climbing. He just stepped over the truck and then he opened the other door and just jumped out.”

But Padilla wonders if someone’s life is worth a car part.

“That thing collapses, no kid’s going to have a chance. And kids get into anything.”

According to city officials, the stacked cars are not in violation of any developmental services code. And fire officials say there is nothing in their codes about how high cars can be stacked.

The owner of A&B Auto Salvage told ABC-7 he is “very confident” that none of the stacks will fall.
