Popular Incense Being Used As Marijuana Substitute
There’s a new incense that is quickly growing in popularity in El Paso, but not so much because of its aroma but because of the misuse of it.
According to drug experts, K2 Spice is being consumed by people looking for a legal marijuana substitute. The incense looks like marijuana, it’s packaged like it, and many times smoked like it.
However, David Molinar, the manager at the Krush Stop were K2 is sold in El Paso said it’s not.
“Our products are strictly for incense use only. It’s not meant for human consumption”, he said.
The incense is made from herbal roots that are sprayed down with chemicals and flavors like blueberry, or cherry.
K2 smokers told ABC-7 it has the same effect as marijuana, and it’s not detected by any specimen tests like a urinalysis. Despite it’s perceived benefits by smokers, substance abuse specialists said it’s not something people should be smoking.
“I believe it’s dangerous because it causes hallucinations, it causes delusions, and it causes paranoia,” drug prevention specialist, Victor Parra said.
Parra said K2 is still new to the market and there isn’t much information as to it’s long term effects on those who smoke it.
The wide misuse of K2 has forced the states of Kansas, Kentucky, and Alabama to ban it. Texas has not.
