Should El Paso Annex Part Of Fort Bliss?

The city of El Paso might consider annexing a portion of Fort Bliss if it can?t figure out how to capture about $3.5 million a year in sales tax revenue generated by the post?s new lifestyle center, Freedom Crossing.

Some stores are already open in the retail development, which is the first of its kind in the nation. More stores are expected to open within months.

The annexation option is mentioned in a Sept. 8 letter from Mayor John Cook to Texas Comptroller Susan Combs.

Fort Bliss is not within El Paso city limits, Cook explains, and while some retailers at Freedom Crossing will charge state sales tax and send it to the state, it?s unclear whether city sales tax will be charged.
