UTEP Shortens Time To Tailgate On Campus

UTEP officials told ABC-7 on Wednesday afternoon that tailgating will not be allowed on inner-campus until 2 p.m. on game days instead of noon.

All generators on University property are prohibited, except in the RV lot on Schuster Avenue. Also, DJ’s or amplified sound systems are not permitted on University property.

The change is effective starting with this Saturday’s game against Memphis.

Tailgating on inner-campus was allowed to start at noon for UTEP’s first two home games of the season.

UTEP officials said the change had nothing to do with incidents during tailgating but because of classes on campus.

There were 13 incidents on campus for the first UTEP game of the season and about double that amount for this past weekend’s UTEP-New Mexico State University game. There also were more than 20 people cited for underage drinking on campus before the UTEP-NMSU game.

A State Trooper told ABC-7 a fellow trooper was hit on the head by a bottle during tailgating for the UTEP-NMSU game.A UTEP student who works security at the game said he saw a woman jump on the back of a sheriff’s deputy after a disagreement.
