SWAT Situation Ends With Arrest
A man is in custody after Doa Ana County sheriff’s officials said he threatened his parents with a gun.
Deputies were called to Evergreen Mobile Home Park on the 6300 block of Doa Ana Road in the county, north of Las Cruces, around 10 p.m. Monday.
Officials said the call was about a stolen vehicle. The caller, who was the parent of the car’s owner, told emergency dispatchers that his son, 33, was searching for his vehicle in the area and he was armed with a handgun.
When deputies arrived, they found the car and went to the home of the family to notify them. Deputies said they learned that the car’s owner was in the home and emotionally unstable.
“The family indicated they were afraid for their safety,” said Lt. Martin Kinney with the Doa Ana County Sheriff’s Office.
“They advised deputies that the subject was inside the house, armed with a handgun, and refusing to come out.”
Sheriff’s authorities called SWAT team officers to the scene and evacuated nearby residents, along with the man’s parents, while they tried coaxing the man out of the home.
It took four hours for the man to surrender. He was also being held arrested in relation to an unrelated warrant.
Doa Ana County Sheriff’s officials are still investigating the incident.
