Flu Cases Up In El Paso In January, February

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health is reminding citizens to take extra measures in order to protect themselves from the flu. The number of flu cases reported in both January and February were higher than normal years. That includes the number of cases reported during the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic.

“We are taking these statistics seriously and will be monitoring the number of new cases in our community,” said Michael Hill, Health Director. “We are hoping to see a decrease once we compile the numbers for March,” he added.

A total of 357 cases of flu, which include the H1N1 strain, were reported in January and 302 flu cases were reported to the Department in February. Last year, the Department received 20 and 21 reports of influenza for January and February respectively.

The Department continues to promote the vaccination of both children and adults against influenza. We remind the public that the current seasonal flu vaccine provides protection from three strains of flu currently circulating which includes H1N1. We are currently only offering the flu vaccine for children and appointments can be made by calling (915) 771-5822. Adults are urged to visit flu.gov to find local retailers that are offer the flu vaccine.

In addition to getting immunized, the public can do their part by practicing the “Four C’s”:

CLEAN-Wash your hands often. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.

COVER-Cover your cough. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Don’t have a tissue? The crook of your elbow will do.

CONTAIN-Contain germs by steering clear of others who are sick. If you do get sick, stay at home until you’re well again so you don’t spread more germs.

CALL-Call or see your doctor if you or your child has a fever greater than 100 degrees.
