Fire Officials Advise Evacuations In Southwest New Mexico

Residents of about 35 homes in southwestern New Mexico have been advised to evacuate because of an approaching wildfire that has burned nearly 52 square miles.

The blaze, dubbed the Miller fire, was burning Monday in a remote, rugged area of the Gila Wilderness.

Fire information officer Carrie Templin says Highway 15 remains closed.

The Gila Cliff Dwellings Visitors Center and some campgrounds along the highway also are shut down.

Officials battling a separate fire southeast of Santa Fe say it destroyed one home.

Fire officials say roadblocks were lifted Sunday in the area near the fire that burned about 14 acres along U.S. 285.

Officials say the fire was caused by overheated vehicle brakes.
