Socorro Police ID 13-Year-Old Killed In Hit-And-Run, Search For Person Of Interest

Socorro Police officers and detectives continue to look for the driver allegedly involved in Tuesday night’s fatal hit and run accident that killed a 13-year-old boy.

Police officials said the entire incident was recorded by a surveillance camera.

The video from a convenience store across the street from the incident at the intersection of Rio Vista and North Loop, clearly shows the Silver PT Cruiser pulling out of a parking lot next to the fatal location. That car and driver have since been cleared.

The video also shows, what was initially reported by witnesses as a light colored car striking and killing Brian Hernandez as he and a friend ran across North Loop. Police said Hernandez was not in a crosswalk.

Socorro detectives and officers were able to piece together the evidence at the scene and on the tape to reveal the car is a 2001-2003 Green Acura CL.

A concentrated manhunt has now spilled outside of Socorro, as officers’ search for the driver, who may have been involved in an arrest in El Paso County later last night, police said. The arrest was in response to an unrelated incident in Socorro about 2 and a half hours after the hit-and-run.

The unrelated incident happened in front of a home 12000 block of Sun Bridge Place. Police say 25 year old Socorro resident Richard Monroy, Jr. got into a verbal argument with a person in that home. Monroy then allegedly rammed the green Acura CL he was driving into a car parked in front of the home and aldo into the home’s garage door. Monroy allegedly took off after that, leading police on a short chase before returning to the home and getting arrested.

Monroy bonded out of county jail before Socorro police could question him regarding a possible connection to the hit-and-run also involving a green Acura.

If you have any information regarding Monroy, you’re asked to call Socorro police at (915) 858-6216.
