StormTrack Weather First Alert Issued Due To Damaging Winds And Blowing Dust

The ABC-7 StormTRACK Weather Team has issued a First Alert for damaging winds and blowing dust Wednesday and Thursday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for all of Southern New Mexico and Far West Texas from noon till 9 P.M. today.

El Paso can expect winds gusting to 60 mph Wednesday and 50 mph Thursday, while higher elevations, as well as the eastern slopes of the mountains, could see gusts near 70 mph Wednesday.

The strongest wind gusts are expected to occur between 5 – 11 P.M.

Reduced visibility due to blowing dust could cause road closures both days, but especially Wednesday afternoon and into the early evening hours. Areas that will be mostly likely to see travel issues will be Interstate 10 west of Las Cruces, as well as routes between Columbus and Deming.

ABC-7 spoke with a representative from the Texas Department of Transportation, who said they would be monitoring the winds carefully during the event.

Officials from the El Paso International Airport wanted to remind those with travel plans to check with their airline before leaving for the airport to make sure flight schedules have not been affected by the winds.

Expect future updates from ABC-7 meteorologists throughout the event, both on-air and online, for the latest information.
