Texas Republicans Try to Avoid Special Session

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Democrats appeared ready to go to a special session rather than compromise on a new school finance law.

House Democratic leader Rep. Jessica Farrar said her team was ready to fight for better school funding. She said Democrats expected that Gov. Rick Perry would bring up controversial immigration legislation if there is a special session on school finance, so they are ready for it.

Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst said he was still trying to win over enough Democrats in the Senate to avoid a special session on school finance. He said he expected Perry to put a number of items on the agenda if a special session is called.

Perry said he could call a special session on Tuesday morning if the Senate doesn’t a pass school finance law.
