Menzies Hires Delk, Announces Staff Changes
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (July 2)-New Mexico State men’s basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has hired former NBA and University of Kentucky standout Tony Delk as an assistant coach. Menzies also announced that Paul Weir is now recognized as the associate head coach and Tom Lewis as an assistant coach.
As the newest member of the Aggie family, Delk arrives in Las Cruces after two seasons at Kentucky as the assistant director of basketball operations. He helped the Wildcats to a 2011 Final Four appearance, 2010 Elite Eight finish, SEC Championship and SEC Tournament Championship.
“The hiring of coach Tony Delk will give us instant credibility with not only our current players but with recruits that are familiar with all of his NBA accolades and not to mention his national championship at Kentucky,” Menzies said. “Tony is a very high character individual, who will undoubtedly bring a lot of positives to the program and assist us in our goals of winning a WAC Championship and competing deep into the tournament.”
Delk began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Carolina Gigantes a team in the National Superior Basketball league in Puerto Rico. As a player at Kentucky, Delk was a second team AP All-American in 1996 after leading the Wildcats to the 1996 NCAA National Championship. As the 16th pick of the Charlotte Hornets, he spent 10 years in the NBA including stints with Golden State, Sacramento, Phoenix, Boston, Dallas, Atlanta and Detroit.
Weir begins his fifth season with the Aggies after spending the previous three seasons (2008-11) as an assistant coach and one year (2007-08) as the director of operations.
“This move was well earned by Paul,” Menzies said. “He has done a fantastic job here in the past four years. He will have a very successful head coaching career someday.”
Lewis becomes an assistant coach in his second season with the Aggies after joining NM State in 2010-11 as the coordinator of player development.
“Tom Lewis has been with the program for a year and when I originally hired him my thought process was to move him up when the opportunity presented itself,” Menzies said. “Based on his experience and resume, he will be an instant benefit in the areas of X and O’s and player development.”
