Former NFL Star Randall Cunningham to speak in El Paso
El Paso, Texas – The Drowning Prevention Coalition of El Paso and El Paso Electric Company will host the first ever ?Respect the Water Luncheon? at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at the Marriott Hotel, 1600 Airway Blvd.
Tickets for the Luncheon are $75 per person and a table of 10 people is $750. A silent auction will be held and all proceeds of the event will go towards the Drowning Prevention Coalition of El Paso, Christian Castle Memorial Fund.
The Drowning Prevention Coalition was formed in March, 2010 through the efforts of Laura and Eddie Castle, parents of Christian Castle who passed away through a drowning 5 years ago. 31 different community organizations, groups and agencies in the city have come together as one with the following mission statement: ?To promote, develop and support training and community education efforts that prevent drowning, near drowning and other water related incidents in El Paso County and the surrounding areas.?
Several events have been hosted by the Coalition such as the Price?s Creameries April Pools Day, Lifeguard Olympics, Learn to Swim Program initiatives, and the ongoing efforts of teaching water safety for all bodies of water to individuals of all ages.
The keynote speaker will be Randall Cunningham, former NFL Great who played 16 years in the NFL (1985-2001) as quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys, and the Baltimore Ravens. Cunningham was a four time All Pro Bowl Selection and was the UPI National Football Conference (NFC) Player of the Year in 1990.
In his NFL career he threw for almost 30,000 yards and 207 touchdowns in the NFL after being a two time Collegiate All-American at the University of Nevada ? Las Vegas (UNLV). In 1984 UNLV was 11-2 with Cunningham at the helm and still today the only 10 win season by the school ever.
After retirement Cunningham returned to UNLV to complete his college degree. Cunningham is an ordained Protestant Minister and founded a church called Remnant Ministries in Las Vegas in 2004. On June 29, 2010, Cunningham?s two ? year old son Christian drowned at the family home in Las Vegas. This will be Cunningham?s first public speaking engagement since that tragic event.
