Two Teens Hit, Killed While Helping Friend Alongside Road

Two teenagers, who had stopped on the side of the road to help a stalled driver, were killed when a man police suspect was drunk crashed into them late Friday evening in northeast El Paso, said police officials.

The Special Traffic Investigators Unit responded with Northeast Patrol to a three vehicle crash at 11:30 p.m. Friday on Loop 375 between the railroad exit and spur 601.

An investigation revealed that 17-year-old Mark Dobbs who was driving a Nissan Sentra was stalled on the outside shoulder of the eastbound lanes of Loop 375.

The two victims, Jon Cervoni, 16, and Aaron Carrillo, 16, arrived to assist Dobbs. They were driving a Honda. All three of them were in a band together, and had just finished playing a show at a local church.

Police said Dobbs and Cervoni were inside the stalled Sentra while Carrillo was standing outside the vehicle when a third car, a Toyota Tundra head east, crashed into the Nissan, which then struck the Honda.

During the collision, Carrillo was struck and died at the scene.

Cervoni was pulled from the Sentra and taken to University Medical Center where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Dobbs was also injured and taken to UMC with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the Tundra was taken to William Beaumont Army Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.

Police describe the driver of the Tundra as a 32-year-old Hispanic man. His condition has not been released.

Before the crash, Cervoni, Carrillo and Dobbs, had just finished playing a show with their band at a local church. Dobbs is the singer of the band. After the band, ‘Ancient of Days’ had played their show at Open Gate Community Church, Dobbs called his two band mates to tell them he was having car trouble.

The teens drove to give Dobbs a hand, when the 32-year-old driver, who police suspect was intoxicated, struck them.

According to police, two warrants for intoxicated manslaughter for this crash have been issued for the driver of the Tundra and he will be booked into El Paso County Jail when he is released from the hospital.

Police said they will release the man’s identity when he is released from the hospital.

A close friend of the boys, Izzy Morales, was at the hospital the night of the wreck and described the moments in the waiting room “Everyone was outside crying. Nobody believed it, cause it was Jon. He was an awesome guy. He didn’t deserve it. He never disobeyed his mom, he respected her, he never disobeyed his dad, he was always spending family time with them.”

This is the 37th and 38th traffic related fatality of 2011, as compared to 36 at this time last year.
