Scott Lieberwirth Named UTEP Men?s Golf Coach
EL PASO, TEXAS ? Scott Lieberwirth, who led NM State to six conference championships and six NCAA Regional appearances, has been named men?s golf coach at UTEP.
Lieberwirth spent eight years as head coach of the Aggies, engineering league titles in 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. He is a five-time conference coach of the year.
?We had an extensive search with over 60 applicants, all very well qualified,? UTEP Director of Athletics Bob Stull said. ?We felt like Scott was the best fit for UTEP and the community. Not only has he enjoyed a run of tremendous success at NM State, but he?s very familiar with El Paso, our players and constituents. We?ve very fortunate to have him.?
“The UTEP men’s golf program has a storied tradition and has always received tremendous support, especially from the city of El Paso,” Lieberwirth said. “That made the position very attractive to me and my family. I’m excited to get to work.
“I spent eight years as the head coach at NM State and four years as a player there. Leaving is bittersweet, but this is an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up at this point in my life,” Lieberwirth said. “I’d like to thank Dr. Boston and President Couture and all of the administrators and donors who have meant so much to me. It has been a great run at NMSU and I wish them nothing but the best in the future.”
Under Lieberwirth?s guidance, NM State won 14 tournaments, had 20 All-Conference selections and the conference player of the year in 2006 (Matt Edwards), 2009 (Travis Reid) and 2010 (Tim Madigan).
Lieberwirth began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at NMSU in the fall of 2003. He was a self-employed professional golfer from 2000-03, firing a course record 61 (11 under par) at the Hooters Tour event in Kendallville, Ind.
The Carlsbad, N.M. native was a four-year letterman at NMSU from 1996-2000. The 1999 Big West conference champion and 2000 Big West Conference MVP, he also participated in the 2000 NCAA West Regional as an individual. He graduated with honors, receiving his bachelor?s degree in Business Administration (Marketing). Lieberwirth was a Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Academic All-American.
