Movie Memorabilia Showcased in El Paso
How would you like to see items worn by Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner and Anne Baxter in one of the most classic films of all time?
A local museum is giving you the chance to do just that.
ABC-7 was given an exclusive tour of “The Ten Commandments” exhibit in downtown El Paso.
The installation is part of a collaboration between the fourth annual Plaza Classic Film Festival and the El Paso Museum of Art to showcase a collection of movie memorabilia from “The Ten Commandments,” as well as the film itself.
“We haven’t had an exhibition like this that includes gowns and jewelry and production drawings from a movie, and this really shows the public how much work goes in to a movie,” said El Paso Museum of Art Curator Christian Gerstheimer.
Dozens of props and items from the film will be on display beginning Saturday at the downtown El Paso Museum of Art.
The exhibit includes arm cuffs worn by Charlton Heston, as well as elaborate chest plates Yul Brynner donned for the film.
One of the most memorable pieces is a dress worn by Martha Scott in the scene where baby Moses is put into the river in a reed basket.
“The thing that I like about it is the way it is pinned up in its display right now and the way it was done. It looks like a Hollywood dress, but then you look at it in its context when she’s putting baby Moses into the reeds in the river, and it’s hard to believe that it’s the same piece,” said Eric Pearson with the El Paso Community Foundation.
The installation also features a number of behind-the-scenes items like story boards and memos sent to the cast and crew while filming on location.
One memo informs actors and crew on the local customs from eye contact to alcohol consumption.
The exhibit runs through Aug. 28, and “The Ten Commandments” film will be shown on Aug. 7 during the Plaza Classic Film Festival.
