Socorro Post Office Under Review
The Socorro Post Office, which also serves Horizon City, is one of 222 offices in Texas slated for possible closure. The USPS released a complete list today of 3,700 offices that will be reviewed to see if they are worth keeping open.
“I’m really upset, and really surprised if they close this one. Like i said, I’ll have to go into El Paso,” said Horizon City resident Libby Harris.
A spokesman with the United States Postal Service said each office will undergo a 57-step evaluation. He added that factors like proximity to other locations and how often each facility is used will be considered.
You can thank the Internet for the coming cuts. Free services like email and online banking are pushing more and more post offices out of daily use.
Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe stated, “Our customers’ habits have made it clear that they no longer require a physical post office to conduct most of their postal business.”
This is a shift that doesn’t much apply to people in Socorro. They say they still depend on their local post office.
“I do a couple online,” admitted Socorro resident Adriana Munoz, “but I do use the post office.”
“It’s not an option for me. For what I do, it has to be through the mail, there’s no other way,” insisted Harris.
“I don’t really use emails for my bills at all,” said Brenda Rueda. “This would really be a bummer if they closed this branch down.”
USPS officials say the process that will determine the fate of the Socorro Post Office could take anywhere from six to nine months to complete.
