Cirque du Soleil Returns To The Sun City

A spectacle returns to the Sun City.

Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Dralion’ makes its debut at the Don Haskins Center Wednesday night.

Through Sunday, the arena will be transformed into a different world filled with high-flying trapeze artists, and jaw-dropping contortionists.

“Dralion is the dragon and the lion combined together to create this mythical creature. It’s about man versus nature and how we can come together as one to create harmony,” said James Santos, assistant artistic director.

Santos said although ‘Dralion’ is a signature performance of Cirque du Soleil, “It represents the ancient acrobats from the Chinese tradition and it’s mixed with the avant garde of Cirque du Soleil,” said Santos.

In December of 2010 ‘Cirque’ made its first-ever stop in the borderland with ‘Alegria’.

As the Don Haskins transforms for four days and eight performances, the city of El Paso has seen a transformation of its own.

From Broadway musicals to acrobatic shows, it seems the Sun City is becoming a frequent stop for big-name acts.

“This city has shown that we purchase top-quality acts,” said Jorge Vazquez, executive director for UTEP’s Special Events Office.

Just last week, the hit Broadway show ‘Wicked’ wrapped up its 12-day stint at the Plaza Theatre.

Vazquez said venues around town are working tirelessly to bring bigger and better shows.

“Our friends from downtown did great with “Wicked” and I’m so happy because that helps. We’re always trying to sell our venues and the city,” said Vazquez.

If you already bought your ticket, you’re in for a spectacle.

‘Dralion’ runs through Sunday at the Don Haskins Center.

Additional seats have been opened up for all eight performances.
