Sunday Morning Wreck Kills 2

A wreck at Doniphan Drive and Montoya Lane claimed two people’s lives. It happened shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to police, witnesses reported that a Jeep driven by 41-year-old Greg Ayala was weaving in and out of traffic as it drove north on Doniphan Drive before it crossed the median and hit a pickup truck. Police say 51-year-old Gerardo Nuez was the driver of that truck. Both people died at the scene.

Police said neither vehicle had any passengers.

Darrel Petry, the spokesman for the El Paso Police Department, said they’re looking into all possibilities while investigating what caused the wreck.

“This stretch of roadway throughout the years has had different fatalities that have occurred on Doniphan,” said Petry.

Doniphan Road was shut down between Montoya Lane and Mulberry Avenue for a period of time while investigators were at the scene.

Police still don’t know if alcohol was a factor in the crash. ABC-7 will continue to update this story as details become available.
