Beloved El Paso doctor remembered

A doctor with a law degree, who taught and quite the athlete.

Many would agree that Dr. Christopher Powers was an accomplished man.

An obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Powers’ life came to a tragic end Thursday night.

For several weeks, Dr. Powers battled critical head injuries after a bicycling accident in the Sacramento Mountains near Ruidoso during the Memorial Day weekend.

Dr. Powers was a well-respected physician among the medical community in El Paso.

Most importantly, a beloved doctor to those he cared for.

“He was just a very caring doctor and it’s going be hard to find a replacement for him. He was just amazing, an amazing man and person overall,” said Sandra Garman, a patient of Dr. Powers.

Powers also delivered Garman’s 7-month-old baby.

Juan Escobar, a cardiology doctor and member of the El Paso County Medical Society said not only did he have a passion for medicine, but also a great athlete.

“Chris was an avid cyclist. I never rode with him, but I would see him in passing,” said Dr. Escobar.

Escobar said many of Powers’ current and former colleagues were aware of the tragic accident, but did not imagine to hear of his death.

“He’s a great loss to the community,” said Escobar.

Funeral arrangements for Dr. Powers have not been confirmed.
