Parents and students of Silva Health Magnet High School organize petition

It’s something you wouldn’t expect from one of El Paso’s most highly regarded schools.

Hundreds of students from Silva Heath Magnet High School attempted a walkout Friday, and over the weekend, parents and students met to discuss as what they see as yet another failure by the El Paso Independent school District.

Students from Silva Magnet High School and their parents signed a petition of protest on Sunday.

Students say the schedule changes allow for less time in the classroom.

They also say their class sizes ballooned, going from around15 students per class to45 students per class.

Now,students worry about the quality of their education.

Dozens of parents showed up to the off-campus meeting.

Silva Magnet High School is intended to prep students for college with the idea they’ll concentrate on jobs in medicinefor the future.

“We are very concerned that she will no longer be graduating from a blue- ribbon school if this change goes through”, said Ericka Aguayo, who’s a parent of one of the students.

The changes have many parents concerned.

Parents say the schedule changesaren’t needed.

“What has worked very well and was not broken is now very inefficient,” said Aguayo.

Isela Castanon Williams,Board Presidentof the El Paso Independent School Districtattended the meeting.

“Whenever there are concerns raised with the functioning of any component in a school there needs tobe a deliberate and conscientious and immediate effort to rectify the situation to fix the problem,” said Williams.

The petition was to have the school change the scheduling back to what it used to be.

EPISDofficials tell ABC-7 they have been working over the weekend trying to adjust the schedules.

They also tellABC-7 they will be having a meeting with parents on Monday.
