El Paso Teams Fare Well In Basketball Playoffs (Bi-District)
What a showing for El Paso-area teams in the 5A boys basketball playoffs! Three out of the four 5A squads fromthe borderland wonbi-district showdowns Tuesday evening. After leading by as much as 17 points, Bel Air beat Abilene 52-45 in Monahans. Meanwhile, Coronado edged San Angelo Central 58-54 in an overtime at a thriller in Ft. Stockton, TX. Immediately afterward in Ft. Stockton, Montwood handed Lubbock Coronado a 46-43 loss. The only 5A team from El Paso tofall was Franklin, wholost to Odessa Permian, 66-54. The Cougars couldn’t overcome a 10-0 deficit from the onset.
In 5A girls action, Bel Air’s dream season came to an end. The Highlanders led 51-50 with about 3:30 left in the game. However, a controversial “no call” allowed Arlington Bowie to go on a run to close the game off. Bel Air lost 59-53 in Odessa. Also in the Permian Basin, the Hanks girls basketball team advanced to the 4A regional semifinals after a 49-43 loss in overtime.
And, back to 4A action in the city of El Paso, Burges took home a bi-district title after the 52-38 victory over Canutillo. At Hanks High School, the Knights knocked off Jefferson 67-61, while Bowie held off Del Valle in the lower valley, 38-34.
In the 3A boys basketball playoffs, Mountain View’s season came to an end after a loss to Monahans in Alpine, TX, 57-45.
