Man dies following shooting involving police near jail

Police are investigating a deadly shooting at the downtown jail involving an inmate and a police officer.

It happened shortly after 6 p.m. Fridayat the downtown detention facility located at 601 E. Overland.

According to police, an officer was escorting a 37-year-old man from the jail to process a medical release.

After exiting the jail, police said the man became confrontational with the officer.

The physical struggle elevated to a point where the officer pulled his gun, and shot the man, according to officials.

Officials said first aid was administered, and the man was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

The man was booked into the jail originally on charges of assault on a public servant, assault bodily injury, assault, and injury to an elderly.

The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is ongoing. Texas Rangers and the police department’s Shooting Review Team are investigating.
