New Mexico State football coach DeWayne Walker could be leaving Las Cruces for a job in the NFL.
KVIA ABC-7’s Asher Wildman has been working to get more details all day, and after speaking with sources at the Senior Bowl, he’s been able to inform us that Walker will be taking a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the team’s Defensive Back’s Coach.
Wildman has learned that NMSU’s Athletic Director McKinley Boston has granted Walker permission to interview with the Jaguars.
NMSU officials have yet to make an official announcement on Walker’s status, or whether or not they’ve made a counter-offer.
Word of Walker’s potential departure was first mentioned by Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports. In addition, an sbnation.com story confirmed the interview at 3:49 p.m. El Paso time saying: “There had been earlier reports via @FootballScoop that a non-BCS head coach would be leaving the college ranks for a job in the pros. It appears that coach is Walker, the 52-year-old coach of the Aggies. Feldman reported that offensive coordinator Doug Martin would likely take over for Walker.
“Walker hasn’t done a great job with New Mexico State, who have a 10-40 record under him and have never won more than four games in a season, never having a winning year – although to be fair, they haven’t had a winning year since 2002. This past year, the Aggies went 1-11, as well as 0-6 in conference. Walker has NFL experience – he served seven years for the New England Patriots, New York Giants, and Washington Redskins between 1998 and 2005 – but its not clear who he’ll coach for in the NFL.”
