6-year-old girl dodged a bullet while traveling near the U.S.-Mexico border with her mother.

ABC-7 crews arrived on the scene as investigators got to work, on what New Mexico state officials are calling a fluke.

A New Mexico State police officer sees a car speeding down the highway andpulls over the driver, 29-year-old Diana Hernandez traveling with her 6-year-old daughter asleep in the backseat.

But the traffic stop turned into more than a citation.

“As he was conducting his business the rear window of this vehicle he pulled over shattered,” said New Mexico State policeSgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez. HetoldABC-7 the officer quickly sprung into action.

“The officer knew they were in danger, and he secured the driver and the passenger, secured them and left the area,” said Sgt. Gutierrez.

Knowing there was a nearby shooter New Mexico State police along with Dona Ana Sheriffs and Border Patrol moved to isolate the area.

“We shut down traffic in all directions in that location so that we can further investigate”

Sgt. Gutierrez tellssays the area near the highway is sometimes used as a shooting range for gun owners.

“Possibly when a round was fired more than likely it ricochet, and it ricochet towards the direction of that vehicle,” said Gutierrez.

ABC-7cameras were rolling on the investigation under way.

Officers searching the car found the bullet, believed to be from a .40-caliber handgun, it landed inches from the 6-year-old’s head.

Within a few hours New Mexico State police wrapped up their investigation with no charges filed.

“Being that the outcome of this investigation has determined that there’s no intent, its just being at the wrong place at the wrong time, you just never know what can happen sometimes,” said Sgt. Gutierrez.

No one was hurt in the incident butABC-7 asked Sgt. Gutierrez if the woman was still given the citation.

He told ABC-7no, the woman had already had enough to deal with for the day.
