Convulsing Students Safe at Home
Three Riverside High School students found convulsing and foaming at the mouth in a parking lot near campus have been released from the hospital.
“They’re doing fine,” Ysleta Independent School District spokeswoman Patricia Ayala said.
The students were rushed to the hospital Monday afternoon when they were found in a Lower Valley parking lot having seizures.
One of the teens was in critical condition when he was transported.
A 9-11 caller stated the boys may have been using the drug “spice.”
Officials have not confirmed the reason behind the seizures.
The three minors were visited at their homes by their principal Tuesday, Ayala said.
“He also met with student services to discuss disciplinary measures,” Ayala said. “We still don’t know what they took.”
Ayala says that even though there is only three days left in the school year, the district is already considering new drug prevention education programs for the new school year, in light of Monday’s bizarre incident.
Spice isa drug made from herbs then sprayed with chemicals. It was banned in Texas after years of sales in convenience stores and smoke shops. The drug’s effects are intended to mimic those of marijuana, though experts report the high is more similar to that of a hallucinogen.
Variations of spice are manufactured and sold on the black market. Many of their effects are unknown even by experts.
