Update: El Paso Police arrest man who allegedly attacked 3 people with box cutter at concert
El Paso Police have arrested a 30-year-old man they allege attacked three people while inside of the Tricky Falls Night Club on Tuesday night during a concert.
Jesus Ortega, 30, of the 19300 block of Cleto Rodriguez, has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, as well as multiple outstanding traffic warrants.
Deicide, a death metal band, was headlining a show Tuesday night at Tricky Falls.
Police say that at about 10 p.m., police arrived on the scene and found three victims with apparent cuts to their heads, neck, and chest. Club staff detained Ortega and turned him over to police.
Police say that at this time, it is not known what led to the attacks other than Ortega being involved in a scuffle inside the bar moments before he pulled out a box cutter and started to allegedly slash the three victims.
Tricky Falls owners told ABC-7 the incident did not happen near the stage, as some reports have claimed.
All three victims were transported to area hospitals for treatment and all are expected to survive.
“Our security did a great job of responding and containing the situation, but most importantly to all of us, we hope for the speedy recovery of our guests,” Tricky Falls owners told ABC-7.
The club’s owners said security is not handled the same at every event at the venue and depends on the genre of show.
“For an art show, there would be more of a visual search, although we still would need to have large bags opened to ensure that alcohol and other prohibited items were not brought into the venue,” Tricky Falls owners told ABC-7. “For some genres, the search is more protracted to ensure that illicit drugs, etc. are kept out of the building, and we also do not allow large spiked jewelry, chains, or anything along those lines that might be used as a weapon. Last night there was a combination of bag searches and patdowns.”
Tricky Falls owners said they are reviewing their security measures to see if anything further could have been done to prevent any incidents that negatively impact their patrons and staff.
Officers have booked Ortega into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
His bonds totaled: $150,686.03. This incident remains under investigation and additional charges are possible.
