UTEP student hit by car has died

Achim F. Schweighofer, a foreign exchange student at The University of Texas at El Paso, has died as a result of a traffic accident in the parking lot of Miner Village, according to UTEP officials.

Miner Village is a student housing community on campus.

At about 12:40 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15, Schweighofer was walking through the Miner Village parking lot, when a vehicle driven by another UTEP student hit him, according to UTEP officials.

UTEP police are investigating the accident and have no additional details at this time.

Schweighofer was transported by ambulance to University Medical Center, where he passed away Saturday evening with his family present.

Schweighofer is from Austria and came to UTEP in August to study one semester at the university.

“We offer our deepest condolences to Achim’s family and friends as they deal with the tragic loss of their loved one,” said UTEP President Diana Natalicio. “While we cannot know the depths of their grief, the UTEP family will do everything we can to help comfort them. This was a very unfortunate accident.”

UTEP is providing grief counselors for its students.
